The Poisoned Bowl

Charles drove home in a state of numb shock, Lucas’s terrifying words echoing in his ears. He looked at Emily in the backseat. She was staring out the window, her face blank. Was she really blind, or was she trapped in a nightmare she was too terrified to speak of? He decided he had to know the truth, but he had to play it smart.

When they arrived home, Evelyn greeted them with her usual warm, doting smile. She immediately ushered Emily into the kitchen. "I made your favorite chicken soup, sweetie," Evelyn said, her voice dripping with affection. Charles watched from the hallway, his heart hammering against his ribs. He saw Evelyn reach into the top cabinet, pull out a small blue dropper bottle, and squeeze three clear drops into Emily’s bowl.

Before Evelyn could stir the soup, Charles stepped into the kitchen. "That smells wonderful, darling," he said, forcing a calm smile. "Actually, my stomach is feeling a bit upset. Mind if I have that bowl instead?"

Evelyn’s face instantly paled. She snatched the bowl away, her knuckles turning white. "No! This is Emily's special dietary soup. I made a different batch for us."

"I insist," Charles said, stepping closer, his voice dropping its warmth. "If it's just soup, there shouldn't be an issue. Eat it yourself, Evelyn. Prove to me it's safe."

Evelyn backed away, her eyes dating to the door. "Charles, you're being ridiculous—"

With a sudden movement, Charles grabbed the bowl from her hands. At that moment, Emily stood up from the table. Without her cane, she walked directly toward them, her eyes wide with fear as she looked straight at her stepmother. "Please don't fight," Emily sobbed. "I'll drink it, Mommy! Just don't hurt Daddy!"

Charles fell to his knees, tears streaming down his face. Emily could see. But she was terrified.
