The Nurse Wore Her Late Daughter's Necklace, and the Truth Broke a Mother's Heart
The Unmistakable Heirloom
The grandfather clock in the chandelier-lit foyer of the Sterling estate ticked with a heavy, rhythmic solemnity. Vivian Sterling, a poised and elegant woman whose silver-blonde hair was swept into an immaculate chignon, stood frozen. Her breath hitched as her eyes locked onto the collarbone of her private nurse, Sarah. Hanging there, catching the warm, golden light of the chandelier, was a delicate gold chain holding a teardrop-shaped emerald, surrounded by a unique filigree of tiny diamonds. It was a piece Vivian knew intimately.
Vivian’s hand flew to her mouth, her heart hammering against her ribs. She stepped forward, her silk blouse rustling in the quiet hallway. Vivian demanded, her voice cracking with an emotion Sarah had never heard from her composed employer.

Resting inside on the white silk was an identical emerald necklace. Sarah gasped, taking a step back as panic flooded her face.
"No... I didn't steal it! I swear, Vivian, I've had this my entire life!"
Vivian stared at the young nurse, her own eyes filling with tears. The resemblance she had ignored for months suddenly became blindingly clear. "Who told you that story?" Vivian whispered, her voice barely audible.
"The lady who raised me,"Sarah sobbed, clutching the emerald close to her chest. Vivian stared in absolute shock, whispering,
"That can't be... Then you are my..."
