The Heavy Sack of Rice

The autumn rain fell in a cold, relentless drizzle, matching the sorrow that weighed heavily on Mary’s chest. Outside the stone archway of the family home she had lived in for thirty years, her son Jack stood with his head bowed. He looked exhausted, his dark denim jacket soaked through. In his calloused hands, he held a heavy burlap sack.

"Take the rice and go, mom," Jack said, his voice barely a whisper. He couldn't even look her in the eye.

Before Mary could utter a single word of protest, Jack turned on his heel and walked away into the gray afternoon. Tears mingled with the rain on Mary's wrinkled cheeks. Heartbroken and confused, she dragged the heavy sack inside, her fragile arms straining under the weight. Why was her only son casting her out like trash?

In the dimly lit dining room, she placed the sack on the rustic wooden table. With trembling fingers, she untied the coarse twine. Expecting to see grains of white rice, she gasped as her hands brushed against something smooth and paper-like. She reached in and pulled out a thick stack of hundred-dollar bills, followed by a small, folded envelope with "Mom" written in Jack's familiar, messy handwriting.

As she opened the letter, her eyes blurred with tears. Outside, standing just beyond the windowpane in the pouring rain, Jack watched her. His heart ached, his silent voiceover echoing the painful truth: "I'm sorry, mom. I couldn't say it in front of her." Mary clutched the note to her chest, sobbing as the reality of her son's desperate situation began to unfurl before her eyes.
