The letter in Mary's hands explained everything. Jack's wife, Evelyn, had been slowly isolating him, controlling their finances, and threatening to put Mary into a neglectful, low-budget care facility if Jack didn't kick her out. Evelyn was vindictive, monitoring Jack's phone and bank accounts. Jack had secretly hoarded cash from side jobs for months, hiding it in the barn, waiting for the perfect moment to help his mother escape Evelyn's cruelty.

"Mom, she was going to have you committed tomorrow," the letter read. "I had to make her believe I was throwing you out. Take this money, rent a quiet apartment in the next town, and stay safe. I will find a way to you."

Mary wept, not out of sorrow, but out of a fierce, maternal anger. Her son had sacrificed his own dignity to protect her, acting like a heartless villain just to save her from his abusive wife. Mary knew she couldn't just run away. She couldn't leave her son in that living nightmare.

Instead of fleeing to the next town, Mary spent the night at a local motel, formulating a plan. The next morning, she walked back to the house.
