The Funeral Interruption

The atmosphere inside the Chapel of Peace was heavy with the scent of white lilies and unspoken grief. Michael, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit, stood with his head bowed near the pristine pine casket of his late wife, Eleanor. The mourners sat in hushed silence, offering soft sighs of sympathy. But the solemn peace was instantly shattered when the heavy double doors flew open. Rachel, Eleanor’s private home care nurse, stood in the doorway. She was still wearing her navy blue scrub uniform and a white apron, but her eyes were wild with determination, and in her hands, she gripped a heavy splitting axe.

"Stop! She's not dead!" Rachel screamed, her voice echoing off the sterile yellow walls.

Before anyone could react, Rachel charged toward the altar. Mourners gasped and shrank back in terror as she raised the heavy tool and swung it with terrifying force. The sharp metal blade bit into the polished wood of the casket lid. Splinters flew through the air like lethal confetti. Michael rushed forward, his face twisted in a mix of rage and panic.

"What are you doing? Someone grab her! She’s insane!" Michael yelled, reaching out to stop her.

But Rachel was fueled by adrenaline. She swung the axe a second time, splitting the lid wide open. Dropping the heavy tool, she began tearing at the cracked, splintered wood with her bare hands, ignoring the sharp edges cutting into her skin. Tears streamed down her face as she worked desperately.

"I heard her!" Rachel cried out, her voice cracking with pure emotion. "I was checking the monitor before they closed it. She's breathing! I know she is!"

Michael froze, his face suddenly draining of all color. A heavy, suffocating silence fell over the chapel. Then, a soft, scratching sound came from within the dark depths of the broken pine box. A pale, trembling hand reached out from the opening, grasping at the air. A muffled, desperate voice gasped from inside.

"Help me..."
