A Strange Boy Approached Clara At Her Husband's Funeral With A Shocking Request
An Unexpected Guest
The scent of white lilies filled the somber funeral chapel, but it brought no comfort to Clara. Draped in a dark wool coat, she stared blankly at the light blue casket holding her late husband, Richard. They had been married for thirty-five years, a lifetime of quiet companionship, though always shadowed by the sorrow of never being able to have children. Now, she was entirely alone.
As the last of the mourners drifted toward the exit, Clara felt a light tug on her sleeve. She turned, expecting a grieving friend, but instead looked down to find a young boy. He couldn't have been more than eight years old. His face was smudged with dirt, and he wore a tattered, oversized gray hoodie that looked as though it hadn't been washed in weeks.
"He said if he died, you would take me," the boy whispered, looking up at her with wide, desperate eyes.
Clara froze, her breath catching in her throat. The chapel suddenly felt incredibly cold. She leaned down toward him, her brow furrowing as she tried to process the bizarre statement. She looked him over, noting his trembling hands and the raw vulnerability in his gaze.
"Take care of you?" Clara asked, her voice shaking with confusion. "Who are you?"
The boy swallowed hard, clutching the hem of his dirty hoodie. "I'm Leo," he said softly. "Richard told me that if anything ever happened to him, I had to find the lady in the dark coat. He said you were my family now." Clara felt the world tilt beneath her feet as the realization of a hidden life began to dawn on her.
