The afternoon sun beat down on the gravel lot outside the old motorcycle workshop, casting long, desaturated shadows across the dusty ground. Cole, a rugged biker with a full beard, grease-stained hands, and arms covered in faded tattoos, was adjusting the carburetor on his chopper. The familiar hum of the highway in the distance was the only sound until a soft gasp broke the quiet. Cole turned to see a young boy, no older than six, stumbling over the uneven grass of the yard. The boy, wearing dusty denim overalls and a faded t-shirt, tripped and fell hard onto the lawn.

The Boy with the Toy

Cole immediately dropped his wrench and knelt beside the child. "Whoa there, buddy. You alright?" he asked, his deep voice carrying a rare gentleness. The boy, Danny, didn't cry about his scraped knee. Instead, he looked up with wide, tear-filled blue eyes, holding up a small, hand-carved wooden motorcycle. The craftsmanship was unmistakable—every detail of the engine and the exhaust pipe was perfectly replicated in miniature. "Please, sir, buy it," Danny pleaded, his voice trembling as a single tear escaped down his dusty cheek.

Cole gently took the toy, his calloused fingers tracing the smooth, polished wood. A cold shock ran down his spine. He had seen this exact style of woodwork before, years ago. His heart hammered against his ribs. "Who made this, kid?" Cole asked, his eyes locking onto the boy's face. Danny sniffled, wiping his nose with his sleeve. "My dad," he whispered. Cole felt the air leave his lungs. He gripped the wooden toy tighter, his voice barely a whisper. "What's his name?"

The boy looked at Cole with a mixture of hope and profound sadness. "My mom said you were there when they buried him," Danny cried out, his voice cracking with emotional weight. "But the grave was empty." Cole froze, the world spinning around him. The ghost of his past had just knocked on his door.
