A Ghost from the Past

Cole stood up, his legs feeling like lead. Six years ago, his best friend and riding partner, Luke, had supposedly perished in a horrific highway accident. Cole had been a pallbearer at the funeral, weeping bitter tears for the brother he lost. Because the crash had been so severe, it was a closed-casket service. Cole had never questioned it—until now. Holding the wooden motorcycle, which bore Luke’s signature initials carved into the tiny chassis, Cole knew the truth. Luke was alive.

"Where is your mother, Danny?" Cole asked, his voice thick with emotion. Danny pointed toward a small, weathered house tucked behind the workshop. Taking the boy's small hand, Cole walked toward the porch, his heart hammering a frantic rhythm. As they reached the steps, the screen door creaked open. A tired-looking woman with kind eyes stepped out, her expression turning from curiosity to absolute shock as she recognized the massive biker standing in her yard.

"Cole?" Sarah whispered, her face draining of color. "What are you doing here?"

Cole held up the wooden motorcycle. "Danny tried to sell me this, Sarah. He told me his dad made it. And he told me something else—something about an empty grave." Sarah gasped, clutching her hands to her chest. She looked at her son, then back at Cole, tears welling in her eyes. "You weren't supposed to find out, Cole. None of you were. It was the only way to keep them safe," she sobbed, stepping down the porch stairs.

Cole stepped closer, demanding answers. "Safe from what, Sarah? Luke was my brother! I would have died for him! Why did you fake his death?" Sarah shook her head, her voice dropping to a terrified whisper. "Because the people he was running from wouldn't stop until he was dead. But they aren't looking anymore. And Luke... Luke has been waiting for the right time to come home."

Luke has been waiting for the right time to come home."
