The Boy and the Biker

The late afternoon sun cast long, amber shadows across the grassy suburban backyard. Marcus sat on his custom chopper, wiping grease from his hands with an old rag, when a sudden rustle in the grass caught his attention. A small, blue-eyed boy of about seven, wearing a faded green t-shirt, tripped over a stray root and tumbled onto the lawn. Marcus, a rugged biker with a graying beard and arms covered in faded tattoos, didn't hesitate. He tossed his rag aside and knelt down beside the child.

"You alright there, buddy?" Marcus asked, his deep voice surprisingly gentle.

The boy, Toby, sniffled and rubbed his scraped knee. Tears welled in his eyes, but instead of crying for his mother, he reached into his pocket and held up a beautifully carved wooden toy motorcycle. It was incredibly detailed, bearing the distinct insignia of Marcus's own motorcycle club.

"Please, sir, buy it," Toby pleaded, his voice trembling as a tear rolled down his cheek.

Marcus gently took the toy, his rough fingers tracing the intricate carvings. A cold shock ran through his veins. He recognized this specific carving style—it was a signature technique known only to one man. Marcus looked up, his eyes boring into the boy's face.

"Who made this?" Marcus asked, his heart hammering against his ribs.
"My dad," Toby whispered, crying openly now.

Marcus grabbed the boy's shoulders, trying to keep his own voice steady. "What's his name, kid?"

Toby looked directly into Marcus's eyes, his face streaked with tears and dirt. What he said next made Marcus's breath catch in his throat.

"My mom said you were there when they buried him," Toby cried out. "But the grave was empty."

Toby cried out. "But the grave was empty."
