An Encounter in the Backyard

The afternoon sun beat down on the dusty backyard, casting long shadows across the wooden fence and the gleaming custom choppers parked nearby. Seven-year-old Jimmy, clad in an oversized denim vest that hung loosely over his small frame, ran across the grass. In his haste, his foot caught a patch of uneven turf, and he tumbled forward, scraping his knee. He didn't cry out from the pain, but rather from the fear of what he might have broken. Clutched tightly in his small hand was a beautifully carved wooden toy motorcycle.

Rex, a rugged biker in his early forties with a thick brown beard and arms covered in elaborate tattoos, was working on a carburetor nearby. Hearing the scuffle, he immediately dropped his wrench and knelt down on the grass beside the boy. "You alright there, buddy?" Rex asked, his gruff voice carrying a surprising warmth.

Jimmy looked up, tears finally spilling over his dirt-streaked cheeks. Instead of crying about his knee, he held the toy motorcycle up with trembling hands.

"Please sir, buy it,"
he pleaded, his voice cracking with emotion. Rex's eyes narrowed as he gently took the wooden toy. He turned it over in his calloused hands. The craftsmanship was unmistakable—the precise curves of the engine block, the signature carving on the tiny wheels. It was a replica of a classic chopper, made with a level of detail only a true craftsman could muster.

"Who made this?" Rex asked, his voice suddenly quiet, almost breathless. Jimmy wiped his nose with the back of his sleeve.

"My dad,"
he sniffled. Rex looked at the boy intently, a sudden storm of memories rushing behind his eyes. "What's his name, kid?" The focus of Rex’s gaze made Jimmy shiver. He cried out,
"My mom said you were there when they buried him. But the grave was empty."

The words hung in the warm summer air, freezing Rex to his core. The toy in his hand felt suddenly heavy, a ghost from a past he had spent a decade trying to bury.
