Previously: When seven-year-old Jimmy offered a handmade toy motorcycle to a rugged biker, he didn't expect the man to recognize it—or to reveal the shocking truth about his father's empty grave.

The Secret in the Wood

Rex’s heart hammered against his ribs. He looked from the wooden toy back to Jimmy’s tear-filled eyes. He knew that carving style; he had seen it hundreds of times. It belonged to Marcus, his former riding partner who had supposedly perished in a tragic river accident ten years ago. Rex had indeed attended the funeral, standing by a closed casket, grieving the brother he thought he’d lost. But Jimmy’s words shattered that reality: the grave was empty.

"Take me to your mother, Jimmy," Rex said, his voice firm but gentle. He stood up, hoisting the young boy onto his hip, still holding the wooden toy tightly. Jimmy pointed toward a modest, weathered house just a few blocks away. As they walked, Rex's mind raced with questions. Why would Marcus fake his death? And why was his son selling his handiwork on the streets?

When they reached the porch, the front door swung open. A tired-looking woman with dark circles under her eyes stepped out. It was Clara, Marcus's widow. When her eyes fell upon Rex, her face drained of all color. She gripped the doorframe so tightly her knuckles turned white. "Rex?" she whispered, her voice trembling. "What are you doing here?"

Rex stepped onto the porch and held up the wooden motorcycle.

"Jimmy tried to sell me this, Clara,"
Rex said, his voice low and dangerous.
"He told me his dad made it. He also told me his dad’s grave is empty. I think you owe me an explanation. Is Marcus alive?"

Clara covered her mouth, a sob escaping her throat. She looked at her son, then back at Rex, realizing that the secret she had guarded for a decade was finally unraveling. She stepped aside, gesturing for Rex to come inside. "You don't understand, Rex," she wept. "He had no choice. He did it to protect us."
