The Dropped Locket

The neon sign of the Neon Oasis Diner flickered weakly against the pitch-black highway sky. Rain fell in relentless, heavy sheets, slicking the asphalt and casting distorted reflections of red and blue light across the pavement. Inside, the warmth of coffee and fried food drifted out every time the heavy glass door swung open, but for Lucas, that warmth was a million miles away. Clad in a damp, threadbare jacket that offered no protection against the autumn chill, the young man clung to the counter, his pale face hollow with hunger.

Before he could even ask for a cup of warm water, a heavy hand gripped his shoulder. Mason, the diner's harsh overnight security guard, sneered down at him. With a brute force that sent Lucas stumbling backward, Mason shoved him toward the exit. "Get out, kid!" Mason barked, his voice cutting through the hum of the diner's jukebox. "We don't want your kind loitering around here."

Lucas stumbled out onto the wet pavement, his boots splashing into a puddle. Tears mingled with the rain on his cheeks as he turned back, shivering violently.

"I'm so hungry,"
he whispered to the empty air, his voice cracking with desperation. As he clutched his chest, his numb fingers slipped, and a small, worn silver locket slid from his pocket, clattering sharply against the cold concrete.

Before Mason could close the door, a heavy, scuffed leather boot stepped into the frame. Jace, a rugged biker who had been sitting quietly in the corner booth, stepped out into the rain. His bearded face was etched with a mixture of curiosity and sudden intensity. He bent down, his calloused hands carefully picking up the tarnished silver locket from the wet ground. He stared at the intricate engravings on the metal, his breath catching in his throat.

Jace looked up, his eyes locked onto the crying boy.

"That locket?"
Jace asked, his voice unexpectedly thick with emotion.

Lucas wiped his nose with his sleeve, looking terrified.

"Mama kept it,"
he replied softly.
