Fleeing into the Shadows

The rain fell in icy sheets, mixing with the metallic tang of rust and the copper scent of blood on Rachel’s forehead. She pressed her back against the freezing metal of a discarded sedan, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. With one trembling hand, she held her five-year-old daughter, Sophie, close to her chest. With the other, she gently but firmly covered Sophie's mouth. Sophie’s bright neon green jacket, once a cheerful choice for a school day, now felt like a neon target in the pitch-black salvage yard.

Sweeping beams of bright white light cut through the downpour, reflecting off the wet puddles and shattered windshields. Two police officers navigated the labyrinth of crushed steel, their heavy boots splashing through the mud. Rachel squeezed her eyes shut as one of the beams swept just inches above her head, illuminating the rusted red wheel well she was crouching behind.

"We have to find her before it is too late," one of the officers called out, his voice cold and devoid of any real concern.

To anyone else, those words might have sounded like a rescue mission. But Rachel knew the terrifying truth. The men searching for her weren't there to save them. They were on the payroll of her powerful, ruthless ex-husband, Arthur, a prominent city official who would stop at nothing to keep his dark secrets buried. Rachel had discovered files proving his deep involvement in a massive embezzlement ring, and now, he wanted her silenced permanently. If these officers found her, she and Sophie would disappear forever into the night.
