A Mother Hides in a Junkyard to Save Her Daughter From Corrupt Officers
Previously: Bleeding and terrified, Rachel hides her daughter Sophie in a dark salvage yard. She knows the police searching for them aren't trying to rescue them—they are trying to silence them.
The Trapped Prey
Rachel's mind raced as the flashlight beams grew closer, casting long, eerie shadows across the wet ground. She could hear the officers' low murmurs and the static crackle of their police radios. Sophie’s small body trembled violently against her, the little girl's eyes wide with a mixture of confusion and sheer terror. Rachel knew they couldn't stay behind the red sedan much longer; the officers were systematically checking every row of vehicles.
Looking around desperately, Rachel spotted the hollowed-out shell of an old school bus a few yards away. Its door hung loosely on its hinges, offering a temporary sanctuary. But to reach it, they would have to cross an open patch of gravel. She needed a distraction, and she needed it immediately.
Her fingers brushed against a heavy, discarded iron pipe lying in the mud. Summoning every ounce of her remaining strength, Rachel hurled the pipe toward the far corner of the yard. It crashed against a stack of loose tires with a resounding metallic clang. The flashlight beams instantly whipped toward the noise.
"What was that? Over there, check the perimeter!" one of the officers barked.
Seizing the fleeting second, Rachel grabbed Sophie’s hand and scrambled toward the bus. They slipped inside, collapsing onto the dusty floorboards. Rachel held her breath, her eyes scanning the dark interior. But her relief was short-lived. A sudden creak echoed from the front of the bus. Rachel froze as a flashlight beam sliced through the dirty windows, landing directly on Sophie’s neon green sleeve.
