The Trap in the Rain

The icy rain fell like needles, washing the blood from the scrape on Megan’s forehead down her cheek. She didn't care about the pain. Her entire universe was centered on the small, trembling body of her six-year-old daughter, Grace, huddled against her chest. Clad in a bright yellow windbreaker that seemed dangerously visible in the gloom, Grace was shaking violently from both fear and the biting cold. Megan pressed her hand firmly but gently over her daughter's mouth, praying the little girl wouldn't cry out.

They were trapped in a sprawling, rain-slicked scrapyard on the edge of town, surrounded by towering walls of rusted metal and forgotten machinery. Just hours ago, Megan had been a normal mother. Now, she was prey.

"We have to find her before it is too late," a voice boomed through the darkness.

Through the cracked window of a rusted white van, Megan watched the sweeping beams of heavy-duty flashlights. The voices belonged to two local police officers. To anyone else, the sight of flashing blue lights and searching officers would have brought a wave of relief. But Megan knew the terrifying truth: these men weren't here to rescue her. They were here on orders from her husband, Arthur, the town’s highly respected but deeply corrupt Chief of Police.

Megan had uncovered the ledger detailing Arthur's illicit dealings with a local crime syndicate. When she tried to flee with Grace, Arthur’s loyal deputies had run her off the road. She had crawled out of the wreckage, grabbed her daughter, and fled into this maze of rusted steel. Now, the heavy thud of combat boots splashed in the puddles, drawing closer with every passing second. A flashlight beam swept directly over the van's rusted wheel arch, missing Megan's wide, panicked eyes by mere inches. She squeezed her eyes shut, holding her breath as the shadow of death loomed over them.
