Previously: Huddled in a freezing scrapyard, Megan holds her breath as police flashlights cut through the rain. But they aren't here to rescue her—they are working for her husband.

A Deadly Confrontation

The flashlight beams lingered on the rusted white van. Megan’s heart hammered against her ribs so loudly she feared the officers would hear it over the steady drum of the rain. The footsteps stopped. A shadow stretched across the wet gravel, stopping just feet from their hiding spot.

It was Officer Miller, Arthur’s most loyal deputy. Beside him was Officer Davis, a young rookie who had only joined the force three months ago. Megan knew Miller would show no mercy, but Davis might still have a conscience.

"Step out with your hands up, Megan!" Miller shouted, his voice dripping with false concern. "We know you're injured. Let us help you."

Megan knew that if she stayed hidden, they would eventually find her. She had to act. Gently whispering to Grace to stay put, Megan slowly stood up from behind the rusted wheel arch, her hands raised. The blinding white light of two flashlights immediately pinned her in place.

"Thank God," Officer Davis breathed, taking a step forward. "Ma'am, you're bleeding. Let me get the first aid kit."

"Stay back, Davis!" Miller snapped, his hand instantly dropping to his holster. "She's unstable. Chief Vance warned us she might be armed and dangerous. She took his private property."

Megan looked directly at the young rookie, her voice trembling but clear. "I am not armed, Officer Davis! My husband is trying to kill me because I found proof of his corruption. Look at my car down the road—Miller ran me off the highway! He's not here to save us; he's here to make sure we never talk!"

Miller’s face darkened in the shadows. He drew his weapon, pointing it directly at Megan. "She's hysterical, Davis. Stand down while I secure the suspect." But Davis hesitated, his flashlight beam flickering between Megan's terrified, bleeding face and his senior partner's drawn gun.
