A Mother Hiding From Corrupt Officers Discovers Who Her True Enemy Is
The Hunt in the Shadows
The cold autumn mist hung thick over the salvage yard, smelling of rusted iron and wet earth. Jessica pressed her back against the freezing metal of a ruined vehicle, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. Her forehead throbbed violently where she had struck the steering wheel during the crash, a warm trickle of blood seeping down into her eyebrow. But she couldn't focus on the pain. Her entire universe was concentrated on the small, trembling figure huddled against her chest.
Hannah, her six-year-old daughter, was wearing a bright yellow coat—a cheerful color that now felt like a neon target in the dark. Jessica kept her hand firmly pressed over Hannah's mouth, silencing the little girl's terrified whimpers. "Shh, baby, please," Jessica whispered in her mind, her own breath coming in shallow, silent gasps.
A few yards away, the sharp beams of high-powered flashlights sliced through the fog. The blue and red strobe lights of a distant police cruiser painted the skeletal remains of stacked cars in eerie, flashing hues. Two officers moved methodically through the aisles of junk. Jessica recognized them. They were officers from her husband Richard’s precinct.
"We have to find her before it is too late,"
one of the officers called out, his voice echoing coldly off the metal carcasses. To any outsider, it sounded like a rescue mission. But Jessica knew the dark truth. If they found her, she and Hannah would disappear forever.
Jessica pulled Hannah closer, dragging her behind the rusted wheel well of a massive teal truck. She squeezed her eyes shut as a flashlight beam swept directly over their hiding spot, missing them by mere inches. Jessica’s eyes snapped open, wide and glossy with tears of absolute panic. She was running out of places to hide, and the men sworn to protect the city were the ones hunting her down.
