A Mother Hiding From Corrupt Officers Discovers Who Her True Enemy Is
Previously: Hiding in a dark salvage yard with her daughter, Jessica thinks the police are her worst nightmare—until one officer reveals the terrifying truth about her husband.
An Unexpected Ally
With an adrenaline surge, Jessica grabbed Hannah’s hand and scrambled backward through the mud, slipping through a gap in the chain-link fence. They bolted into the dark, cavernous interior of an abandoned brick warehouse at the edge of the yard. Inside, the air was freezing and smelled of decay, but it offered temporary shelter from the sweeping searchlights.
As they hid behind a stack of wooden pallets, Jessica’s phone vibrated in her pocket. The screen illuminated her pale face, displaying a text message from an unknown number. The words sent a chill straight to her bones: "You can't run from me, Jess. My men own these streets. Just bring my daughter back." It was Richard. Her husband, the highly decorated detective, was pulling the strings from the shadows.
Before she could swallow her fear, heavy footsteps echoed near the entrance. The beam of a flashlight cut through the warehouse gloom. Jessica held her breath, but it was too late. The light locked onto Hannah's bright yellow coat.
"Don't move,"
a voice commanded. It was Officer Miller, one of the men from the salvage yard. He drew his weapon, stepping into the light. Jessica stood up, shielding Hannah with her body, tears streaming down her face. "Please," she begged, her voice cracking. "Don't let him take her. You know what he is."
For a tense, agonizing second, the warehouse was dead silent. Then, to Jessica's utter disbelief, Officer Miller lowered his gun and switched off his flashlight. He stepped closer, his expression grim. "I know," Miller whispered urgently. "That's why I'm here. Richard thinks I'm on his side, but I’ve been building a case against him for months. If his loyal cronies find you first, they will cover up everything. We need to get you to the federal authorities right now."
