A Father's Worst Nightmare

The torrential rain beat mercilessly against Matthew’s windshield as he navigated the dark, winding roads back to his suburban home. The storm had knocked out several streetlights, casting the neighborhood into an eerie, suffocating darkness. Matthew’s only thought was of his six-year-old son, Logan, who was supposed to be safely asleep inside. But as Matthew pulled into the driveway and stepped out into the freezing deluge, a sound pierced through the howling wind—a high-pitched, desperate cry that made his blood run cold.

Sprinting toward the back of the house, Matthew’s heart hammered against his ribs. There, standing on the wet wooden patio, was Logan. The little boy was wearing his favorite Spider-Man costume, now soaked through and clinging to his shivering frame. Tears streamed down his pale cheeks as he banged his tiny fists against the locked sliding glass door, his voice hoarse from screaming.

"Daddy! Daddy! Please open the door!"

Anger and panic surged through Matthew. He rushed forward, instantly stripping off his heavy black leather utility jacket and wrapping it around his trembling son. Shielding Logan’s fragile body with his own, Matthew tried the handle. It was locked tight. With a roar of primal fury, Matthew threw his shoulder against the glass door, shattering the lock mechanism and bursting into the dimly lit house. He set Logan down safely in the dry hallway, whispering a quick promise that he was safe now, before spinning around and charging up the wooden staircase, soaking wet and consumed by a terrible rage.

He flung open the master bedroom door, expecting to find his wife asleep or incapacitated. Instead, the warm glow of the bedside lamp revealed Lauren in bed, clutching the sheets to her chest. Beside her sat another man. Matthew’s voice shook the very walls as he yelled,

"You locked him out! Our son was freezing in the storm!"

Our son was freezing in the storm!"
