A Father's Worst Nightmare

The rain was coming down in relentless sheets, blurring the taillights of the few cars brave enough to navigate the storm. Ryan gripped the handlebars of his motorcycle, his knuckles white. All he wanted was to get home to his wife, Heather, and their six-year-old son, Ethan. But as he pulled into the driveway of his suburban home, an eerie feeling washed over him. The house was mostly dark, save for a dim light upstairs.

As Ryan walked toward the back patio, a sound cut through the howling wind—a high-pitched, desperate sob. He rounded the corner and froze. There, standing on the wet, freezing tiles of the patio, was Ethan. He was wearing his favorite Spider-Man costume, now soaked through and clinging to his tiny, shivering frame. The boy was banging his small fists against the locked sliding glass door, his face streaked with tears and rain.

"Daddy! Daddy! Let me in! It's cold!" Ethan screamed, his voice cracking with terror.

Adrenaline surged through Ryan's veins. He rushed across the yard, shedding his heavy black motorcycle jacket. He wrapped the warm leather around his shivering son, lifting him into his arms. Ethan clung to his neck like a lifeline, his body shaking uncontrollably. Ryan tried the handle of the sliding door, but it was locked tight from the inside.

Furious and terrified, Ryan didn't hesitate. He kicked the side panel of the door, forcing the lock to snap, and burst into the house. The home was warm, a sickening contrast to the freezing storm outside. Holding his crying son, Ryan ran frantically up the wooden staircase, his boots leaving wet tracks on the steps. He marched down the hallway and flung open the master bedroom door, expecting to find his wife asleep or hurt.

Instead, the dim light of the bedside lamp revealed a scene that shattered his world. Heather was in bed, but she wasn't alone. Another man was scrambling to pull up the sheets.

"You locked him out!" Ryan roared, his voice trembling with a mixture of rage and pure heartbreak.

Heather looked up in stunned, guilty silence, her face draining of color as she stared at her wet, shivering husband and her crying son.
