A Cold Night at the Tavern

The neon sign of the Roadside Tavern buzzed with a sick, flickering hum, casting a harsh pink and blue glow over the rain-slicked asphalt. It was a miserable, freezing night in the heart of Oregon, the kind of wet cold that seeped straight into a man’s bones. Outside the heavy wooden doors, a young man named Logan stood shivering, his thin wool sweater thoroughly soaked and clinging to his hollow chest. He hadn’t eaten a real meal in three days, and the savory, warm scent of fried food wafting from the tavern kitchen was driving him to the brink of despair.

Before he could even stretch his hand toward the brass doorknob, the heavy door swung open. Mitch, the tavern’s burly security guard, stepped out into the damp air. Wearing a bright high-visibility vest that contrasted sharply with the dark night, Mitch sneered down at the trembling youth. Standing over him was Judd, a rugged, bearded biker clad in a heavy leather vest, his face hardened by years on the open road. Judd looked down at his boot, then slowly bent over, his calloused hands carefully picking up the locket from the mud.

As Judd wiped the grime from the silver surface, his tough exterior suddenly shattered. His eyes widened, and his bearded face softened into an expression of sheer disbelief and raw emotion. He looked up at the shivering boy, his voice trembling slightly as he asked:

"That locket?"

Logan, trembling from both the cold and fear, swallowed hard and whispered back:

"Mama kept it."

He looked up at the shivering boy, his voice trembling slightly as he asked:"That locket?"Logan, trembling from both the cold and fear, s…
