Previously: When a starving young man is thrown out of a roadside tavern, a rugged biker finds a dropped silver locket that reveals a heartbreaking family secret hidden for twenty years.

The Engraving in the Mud

Judd stood frozen under the flickering neon light, the heavy rain bouncing off his leather shoulders. In his palm, the tiny silver locket felt heavier than lead. With a trembling thumb, he popped open the delicate clasp. Inside was a faded, water-damaged photograph of a young woman with bright, laughing eyes, and opposite to it, a simple engraving: "To Sarah, My Whole World." A sharp pain pierced Judd's chest. Sarah was his younger sister, the girl who had run away from home twenty years ago to escape their controlling father. Judd had spent half his life searching for her, chasing dead ends and cold trails across the country, only to find nothing but silence.

Mitch, still standing at the tavern door with his arms crossed, scoffed loudly. "Hey, Judd, don't waste your time on that street trash. He's been begging around here all night. Just throw his junk back in the mud and come inside for a cold one." Mitch sneered, stepping forward to dismiss the boy once more.

But Judd didn't move. A dangerous fire ignited in his eyes as he slowly turned to face the guard. Standing at a towering six-foot-three, the rugged biker loomed over Mitch, his voice dropping to a low, menacing growl.

"Shut your mouth, Mitch, before I shut it for you."

The guard took a step back, his tough demeanor instantly evaporating under Judd's furious gaze. Judd turned his attention back to the shivering boy on the gravel. He knelt down in the mud, completely ignoring the rain, and placed a warm, heavy hand on Logan's trembling shoulder.

"What was your mama's name, son?"

Judd asked, his voice cracking with an emotion he hadn't felt in decades. Logan looked up, his eyes wide with confusion and hope. He wiped the rain from his face and whispered, "Her name was Sarah. Sarah Vance. She... she passed away six months ago, sir. She told me if I ever found myself in Oregon, I should look for a man named Judd. But I lost everything, and I didn't know where to start."
