The Cold Marble Floor

The foyer of the grand Oakridge mansion was a masterpiece of classic architecture. Sunlight streamed through the towering arched windows, casting bright, luxurious beams across the polished marble floors. But the serene beauty of the morning was fractured by an underlying tension. Kneeling on the cold, wet tiles was Chloe. Dressed in a simple, faded beige dress, she gripped a wooden scrubbing brush, her knuckles white as she methodically cleaned the grout. To anyone passing by, she looked like a simple laborer, invisible and insignificant.

Standing just a few feet away was Diana, the epitome of glamorous arrogance. Draped in designer silk and holding a delicate crystal flute of champagne, Diana watched Chloe with a dismissive, cruel smile. She took a slow sip, her eyes gleaming with satisfaction. For Diana, having people bow before her—even literally—was the ultimate proof of her newly acquired high status.

The heavy mahogany double doors swung open, and Richard walked in. A successful businessman in his early forties, he looked sharp in a tailored charcoal suit, carrying a leather briefcase. He stopped dead in his tracks, his gaze shifting from Chloe on her knees to Diana standing over her. The silence in the room became deafening.

"She's just doing what she's good at, cleaning,"

Diana said, her voice dripping with condescension as she gestured toward Chloe. She expected Richard to chuckle, to agree, or at least to ignore the girl. Instead, Richard's face darkened with an intensity she had never seen before. He pulled out his phone, dialed a number, and barked into the receiver:

"Cancel everything, now!"

Diana gasped, the champagne glass nearly slipping from her manicured hand.

"What? Richard, what are you doing?"

she stammered. Richard looked at her with eyes like ice.

"This house is no longer yours,"

he stated flatly, as Chloe slowly stopped scrubbing and looked up from the floor.
