The Cruelty in Aisle Four

The sweet, warm aroma of freshly baked sourdough and sweet pastries usually made the supermarket bakery aisle a place of comfort. But on this chilly Tuesday afternoon, the air felt suffocatingly tense. Evelyn stood in the center of the aisle, her pristine tan trench coat draped elegantly over her shoulders, her designer handbag clutched tightly in her manicured hand. She looked down with utter disgust at Lucy, a young woman whose tattered clothes and pale, hollow cheeks told a story of severe hardship.

Without a word of warning, Evelyn reached into her leather purse, pulled out a handful of loose silver coins, and threw them onto the polished linoleum floor. The metal clinked loudly, scattering in all directions. To add to the humiliation, Evelyn slowly extended her designer heel and kicked one of the shiny quarters far under the bottom shelf. "There," Evelyn sneered, her voice dripping with malice. "Since you like begging so much, go ahead and clean that up."

Lucy gasped, tears instantly welling in her tired eyes. Desperation and hunger overcame any sense of pride she had left. She fell to her knees, her hands trembling violently as she began to gather the scattered coins from the cold floor. "Ahhh, ahhh!" she sobbed, a sound of pure heartbreak echoing through the aisle as she desperately reached under the shelving to retrieve the kicked quarter. Her knuckles scraped against the rough metal edge, but she didn't stop.

Just a few feet away, behind the bakery counter, stood Walter. The older baker, dressed in a spotless white apron, watched the entire scene unfold. His knuckles turned white as he gripped the edge of the wooden prep table, his eyes burning with deep, silent disapproval. He knew both of these women, and he knew exactly what he had to do next.
