She Humiliated A Poor Girl With Coins, But The Baker Knew A Secret
Previously: When Evelyn threw coins on the floor to humiliate a struggling young woman, she didn't realize the quiet baker watching them held the power to ruin her entire life.
The Baker Steps Out
Walter did not hesitate. He untied his apron, threw it onto the counter, and stepped out into the aisle. Evelyn turned, expecting the bakery worker to side with her or ignore the situation entirely. Instead, Walter bypassed her completely and knelt down on the cold floor next to Lucy. Gently, he placed his large, warm hand over her trembling fingers. "Stand up, my dear," Walter said softly, his voice a soothing balm to her shattered dignity. "You do not have to crawl for anyone."
Evelyn let out a sharp, mocking laugh. "Oh, please! You're going to coddle a thief? She was trying to steal bread from your bakery, old man. I was just teaching her some manners. You should be thanking me for keeping your aisle clean of trash."
Walter stood up slowly, his posture straightening to reveal a commanding presence that seemed entirely out of place for a simple supermarket baker. He looked Evelyn dead in the eye, his expression icy. "The only trash I see in this aisle is the woman standing in that expensive trench coat," he said, his voice echoing clearly. "And as for who I am, I suggest you look a little closer, Evelyn."
Evelyn frowned, her arrogant smile faltering. "How do you know my name? You're just a low-wage baker."
"I may be wearing a baker's uniform today, but my name is Walter Sterling,"he replied calmly. "I am the founder and majority shareholder of this entire supermarket chain. And more importantly, your husband, Richard, is the regional manager who reports directly to my board of directors. A board that I still chair." Evelyn’s face instantly drained of all color. She took a step back, her hands beginning to shake as the reality of her situation set in.
