The Mockery of the Elites

The grand banquet hall of the Blackwood estate glowed with the warmth of a hundred scented candles, casting flickering shadows over the dark mahogany walls. Wealthy elites dressed in designer tuxedos and sparkling gowns sat around a long table draped in pristine white linen. They laughed and toasted to their fortunes, completely detached from the cold world outside. That was until Oliver stepped into the light.

Wearing a threadbare, faded olive windbreaker that had seen far better days, the young man stood out like a stain on silk. His hands trembled as he stood at the edge of the table, clutching a small, worn velvet pouch. He looked pale, exhausted, and desperately out of place. Before he could even speak, Victoria, a radiant blonde socialite in a glittering champagne gown, smirked. With a playful, mocking laugh, she reached out and snatched the pouch right out of his hands.

"Oh, look what the cat dragged in! Is this our entertainment for the evening?" she giggled, holding the pouch high.

Sitting nearby, Robert, a distinguished older man with sharp features and wire-rimmed glasses, let out a hearty laugh. The rest of the table joined in, amused by Victoria's cruel game. Victoria shook the pouch, opened it, and then handed it back to Oliver, completely empty. She had palmed whatever was inside, treating the young man's desperate plea as a cheap parlor trick.

Oliver looked up, his eyes filled with tears, pleading with the heartless crowd.

"Please. It is the only thing I have left," he whispered, his voice cracking.

As he took the empty pouch back, his trembling fingers fumbled. From Victoria's hand, a small silver ring slipped, landing softly on the white tablecloth. It rolled slowly, catching the candlelight, before coming to a dead stop right in front of Robert. Instantly, Robert’s laughter froze. His face went entirely pale, and a heavy, suffocating silence fell over the entire room.
