The sudden silence in the grand hall was deafening. Victoria’s smug smile slowly faded as she looked at Robert, whose eyes were wide with a mixture of terror and disbelief. He stared at the small silver ring as if it were a ghost. It wasn't just any cheap piece of jewelry; it was a custom-made band engraved with an intricate ivy leaf pattern, a design Robert knew intimately.

"Robert? Darling, what is it? It's just a piece of junk," Victoria said, her voice dripping with forced casualness as she reached to sweep the ring away.

"Don't touch it!" Robert roared, his voice booming through the high-ceilinged room.

Victoria flinched, pulling her hand back in shock. Robert slowly picked up the ring with shaking fingers, turning it over. On the inside of the band, the initials R & E were faintly visible. Twenty-two years ago, Robert had given this exact ring to Elena, his college sweetheart. She was a working-class woman whom his wealthy, controlling parents had deemed completely unsuitable. Under immense family pressure, Robert had abandoned her, choosing his inheritance over love. Elena had vanished shortly after, and he had never seen her again.

Robert looked up at Oliver, his gaze intense, searching the young man's face. Now that he was truly looking, he saw the familiar shape of Elena's eyes, and the unmistakable structure of his own jawline.

"Where... where did you get this?" Robert asked, his voice barely a whisper, stripped of all his former arrogance.

Oliver wiped a tear from his cheek, standing tall despite his ragged clothes.

"It belonged to my mother, Elena," Oliver replied softly. "She passed away in a shelter last month. Before she died, she gave me this ring and told me to find Robert Blackwood. She said you were the only one who could help me."
