The Interrogation in the Parlor

The air in the vintage parlor tasted of dust and old wood. In the corner, near the silent upright piano, Eleanor stood like a ghost, her eyes wide with a mixture of fear and compliance. But it was Margaret who held the room’s terrifying gravity. Despite her seventy-three years and the fragile knit shawl draped over her shoulders, her grip was like iron. With a sudden, vicious surge of strength, she shoved twenty-nine-year-old Chloe’s head down into the freezing water of a heavy metal bucket.

Chloe thrashed, her hands scraping against the cold metal, before Margaret finally released her. Gasping for air, Chloe collapsed onto the oak floor, coughing violently as water soaked her ash-blonde hair. Margaret stood over her, trembling with rage, holding an empty red ring box.

"Where did you hide the gold, you filthy thief?" Margaret shrieked, her voice cracking with age and venom. "It belonged to this family long before you crawled into this house!"

Chloe shook her head, tears mixing with the water on her face. "I didn't take anything!" she sobbed. Desperate to prove her innocence and end the madness, she dragged herself toward the heavy iron safe hidden behind the tapestry. She knew the combination—she had seen Margaret spin it a thousand times. With trembling fingers, she cracked it open, expecting to find the gold to throw at her grandmother's feet.

Instead, her hand brushed against a bundle of old, yellowed documents. She pulled them out, her eyes scanning the faded ink of an official registry. It was a birth certificate from 1995. As she read the names, her breath caught in her throat. She looked up at Margaret, her voice trembling.

"Whose birth certificate is this?"

The fury on Margaret’s face instantly evaporated, replaced by a pale, stunned shock.
