The heavy oak door of the Miller household creaked open, letting in a draft of the cool autumn air. Sarah stepped inside, her heavy boots clicking softly against the hardwood floor. She was still wearing her military camo jacket, the fabric smelling of dust and long journeys. She had planned to surprise her mother, Eleanor, after months of deployment overseas. Instead of a warm welcome, the moment she stepped into the narrow hallway, the sound of aggressive shouting shattered the silence of her childhood home.

Standing over Eleanor in the dim indoor lighting was Richard, Sarah's older brother. His face was flushed with rage, his charcoal grey t-shirt damp with sweat. Eleanor, dressed in her favorite soft pink cardigan, was slumped helplessly on the floor, weeping hysterically near the wall-mounted key holder. The sight of her fragile mother cowering in fear sent an immediate shockwave of adrenaline through Sarah's veins.

"Old burden, go to hell! Die and leave all the money for me!"

Richard roared, raising his fist as if to strike the fragile woman. Years of military training overtook any hesitation. Sarah knew she had to act instantly before her brother did the unthinkable.

"She's your mother, you can't do that!"

Sarah yelled, stepping boldly into the dim hallway light. Before Richard could even register his sister's presence, Sarah delivered a swift, powerful kick directly to his chest. The force of the blow sent him flying backward, crashing hard against the wall before he slumped to the floor with a pained groan.

"Ah!"

Richard whimpered, clutching his ribs as the breath was knocked out of him. Sarah didn't give him a second glance. She immediately knelt beside the trembling older woman, wrapping her arms around her in a tight embrace. She whispered gently into her ear, offering the comfort her mother desperately needed in that terrifying moment.
