Weeks before her return, Sarah had helped Eleanor transfer the deed of the house into a secure family trust, making it legally impossible for Richard to seize or sell the property to cover his debts.

Realizing his elaborate scheme was crumbling, Richard grew desperate. He confessed that he had already stolen Eleanor's checkbook and emptied her modest savings account earlier that morning. He sneered, claiming there was nothing Sarah could do to get the cash back. The betrayal ran deeper than Sarah had ever imagined, leaving her mother financially ruined and emotionally shattered in her own home.
