The grand cathedral of St. Jude was bathed in a cold, celestial light that filtered through the towering stained-glass windows. Prince Christian walked down the long stone aisle, his boots echoing sharply against the marble floor. He wore his finest gold and emerald green garb, but his heart felt heavier than lead. The rumors whispered throughout the kingdom had not prepared him for this shocking sight. At the altar stood King Stephen, a stern, aging monarch wrapped in heavy bronze-trimmed robes. Beside him stood the princess, Adelaide.

But there was no delicate silk veil gracing her head. Instead, her entire skull was encased in a heavy, locked wooden barrel, reinforced with brass bands. The crowd watched in breathless silence as Christian approached the altar. King Stephen did not offer a smile or a warm greeting.
