Previously: When Prince Christian was forced to marry Princess Adelaide, her head was locked inside a wooden barrel. Opening the latch revealed a dark secret that threatened to tear the kingdom apart.

The Secret of the Iron Mask

Inside the dark hollow of the barrel, Christian did not see the face of the beautiful maiden he had imagined. Instead, he stared into a horrifying apparatus of brass, silver, and glass. A mechanical mask was fused directly to Adelaide's pale skin, with small copper tubes running into her neck, pulsing with a strange, glowing blue fluid. Her eyes, wide and filled with tears of blood, stared back at him in silent agony.

Christian spun around to face King Stephen, his voice shaking with a mixture of rage and terror. "What did you do to her?" he demanded, gesturing wildly at the locked barrel. "What kind of monster are you to lock your own daughter in this cage?"

King Stephen sighed, a sudden look of deep exhaustion washing over his weathered face. He ordered the guards to clear the cathedral, leaving only the young couple and himself in the sacred space. Once the heavy oak doors were sealed, the old king fell to his knees before Christian.

"It was not my cruelty that did this, Christian," the king wept. "It was the poison of the Black Serpent Guild. Years ago, they sought to destroy my lineage. This mask is the only thing keeping her heart beating. It was forged by the forbidden alchemists of the north."

But the truth was far darker than a mere medical marvel. Stephen revealed that the mechanical mask required a continuous source of pure life force to remain active. Up until now, the kingdom’s prisoners had been sacrificed to keep the princess alive, but their tarnished souls were no longer strong enough. "She needs the life force of someone of noble blood who truly binds themselves to her," Stephen confessed. "Our marriage alliance was not for peace. It was to save my daughter's life using yours."

Before Christian could process the horrifying trap, a faint, clicking sound came from the barrel. The small latch door, still slightly open, vibrated. A soft, synthesized voice whispered from the depths of the wood.

"Run, Christian," Adelaide pleaded. "My father is lying to you. He does not want to save me—he wants to control the throne of both our kingdoms."
