His Father-in-Law Forced Him to Marry a Bride in a Locked Barrel
The Bride in the Barrel
The grand cathedral of Saint Jude was filled with the scent of burning incense and damp stone. For Prince Vincent, the air felt suffocating, like a tomb. His family’s legacy lay in ruins, their ancestral lands mortgaged to the hilt. The only salvation was a desperate alliance with King George, a ruler known as much for his cruelty as his vast wealth. But the price of this salvation was Vincent's freedom. He was to marry Princess Sophia, a woman he had never laid eyes upon.
As the heavy oak doors groaned open, a collective gasp rippled through the congregation. Walking down the aisle was not a radiant princess in flowing silk, but a figure of nightmares. The woman’s body was adorned in bridal lace, but her head was entirely encased in a heavy, locked wooden barrel. Rusted iron bands bound the dark oak, and a heavy brass padlock hung beneath her chin. Beside her walked King George, his scarlet robes sweeping the stone floor, a triumphant sneer playing on his lips.
Vincent took a step back, his heart hammering against his ribs.
"My daughter is now your wife,"King George declared, his booming voice echoing off the vaulted gothic ceilings. The priest, pale and trembling, rushed through the vows, terrified of the King's wrath. Vincent, numb with shock, whispered his assent. The trap was sprung.
With a cruel grin, the King handed Vincent a small brass key.
"Now, unlock your bride, Prince Vincent. Let us see the face of your new queen."Vincent’s hands shook as he approached the wooden contraption. He could hear her shallow, terrified breathing from within. He inserted the key into the latch and swung the small door open. He peered into the darkness, expecting a monster. Instead, his breath caught.
"Oh my God,"he gasped, stumbling back. Staring back at him was Clara, the humble village girl he had secretly loved for years, gagged and weeping in terror.
