The Silent Bride

The grand Gothic cathedral of Saint Jude was bathed in a haunting, amber glow as the afternoon sun filtered through the towering stained-glass windows. Dust motes danced in the air, creating a surreal atmosphere that felt more like a dream than a wedding. At the altar stood Prince Thomas, a handsome young nobleman dressed in an embroidered silver and black velvet doublet. His heart hammered violently against his ribs. He was here to save his family from financial ruin, but the price of their salvation was a marriage shrouded in absolute secrecy.

Suddenly, the heavy oak doors at the back of the cathedral creaked open. King Arthur, an elderly sovereign clad in a heavy, gold-trimmed emerald green robe, stepped inside. Beside him walked his daughter, Princess Clara. A collective gasp rippled through the few gathered witnesses. Clara’s head was completely encased in a dark, polished wooden barrel, reinforced with heavy iron bands and secured with a brass padlock. She moved slowly, her hands trembling as her father guided her down the long stone aisle.

Thomas stared in disbelief, his breath catching in his throat. He had heard rumors of the princess's reclusive nature, but this was madness. King Arthur reached the altar, his face a mask of stern determination. He placed Clara’s hand into Thomas’s cold grasp. Arthur looked forward, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings as he declared,

"My daughter is now your wife."

The ceremony was a blur. When the vows were hastily spoken, the king handed Thomas a small brass key. With trembling fingers, Thomas reached out toward the wooden barrel. He slid the key into the brass padlock, the metallic click sounding like a gunshot in the silent cathedral. He slowly opened the small hinged latch door on the front of the barrel. Thomas leaned forward, peering into the shadows within, and instantly recoiled, gasping in horror,

"Oh my God."
