Previously: When Prince Thomas was forced to marry Princess Clara, her head was sealed inside a locked wooden barrel. But when he opened the latch, the dark truth shattered the kingdom.

The King's Ultimatum

Inside the dark hollow of the barrel, Princess Clara’s eyes were wide with sheer panic. To Thomas's horror, her lips had been bound shut with delicate silver thread, rendering her completely mute. Pinned to her collar was a crumpled parchment note written in the king’s distinct, elegant script: "She knows the truth of her mother's death. If she speaks, our dynasty falls." Tears streamed down Clara's cheeks, pooling against the rough wood of her confinement.

Before Thomas could process the horror, the heavy cathedral doors slammed shut with a resounding boom. The sound echoed through the cavernous space, chilling Thomas to the bone. He spun around, instinctively placing himself between his new bride and the sudden threat. King Arthur stood at the entrance, but he was no longer alone. A dozen royal guards emerged from the shadows of the stone pillars, their crossbows loaded and aimed directly at Thomas’s chest.

Arthur walked slowly down the aisle, his emerald robe rustling against the stone floor. His expression was cold, devoid of any fatherly warmth.

"You have seen the secret, Thomas,"
the king said, his voice flat and menacing.
"Now, you face a choice. You can accept this arrangement, keep her locked away, and rule this kingdom by my side. Or, you can play the hero, and both of you will die in this cathedral today."

Thomas looked at the guards, then back at Clara, who was shaking violently. He realized this had never been a simple marriage of convenience; it was a trap designed to force him into becoming an accomplice to the king's tyranny. If he stayed silent, his family's debts would be erased, but he would lose his soul. If he fought, he faced certain death. The tension in the cathedral was suffocating as Thomas gripped the hilt of his sword, his mind racing for a way out of the deadly trap.
