The Secret on the Screen

Richard sat in the quiet interior of his charcoal SUV, the engine idling softly. He had just pulled into the driveway of his estate, intending to finish a business call before heading inside. But a persistent, uneasy feeling tugged at his chest. His seven-year-old daughter, Lily, had been unusually quiet lately, shrinking away whenever her new stepmother, Eleanor, entered the room. Wanting to ease his mind, Richard pulled up the live security feed of the house on his smartphone.

What appeared on the screen made his breath catch in his throat. Inside the grand, sunlit marble hallway, Lily was on her knees. She was clutching a heavy mop, her small frame trembling as she pushed it across the floor. Tears streamed down her flushed cheeks. Sitting nearby in a plush armchair was Eleanor, casually eating grapes from a silver bowl, her expression cold and detached.

"Clean it again," Eleanor ordered, her voice cutting through the speaker.

Lily squeezed the mop handle, her tiny knuckles turning white. "My hands hurt," she whimpered, looking up with pleading eyes. Eleanor merely glared in the direction of the camera, entirely unaware that Richard was watching her every move. "Then cry quieter," she snapped back, her tone dripping with malice.

On the screen, Lily began to sob openly, her spirit completely broken.

"Please, I want dad!" she begged.
Eleanor sneered, leaning forward.
"He won't see this," she said mockingly.

Outside in the car, Richard’s grip tightened on his steering wheel until his knuckles bruised. "I see everything," he whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of raw fury and heartbreak. He threw the car door open, charged up the stone steps, and slammed the heavy front door open. Eleanor’s smug smile instantly vanished, replaced by absolute terror as Richard stood in the doorway.
