The Photo on the Pavement

The golden hour always brought a heavy, suffocating silence to the historic streets of Oakhaven. For David, walking down the brick-paved sidewalk under the crimson sunset was a daily ritual of grief. It had been five long years since the tragic fire at the clinic had taken his beloved wife, Sarah. He wore his beige trench coat like a shield against the world, keeping his hands buried deep inside his pockets. He didn't realize that as he pulled his hands out to adjust his collar, a small, worn photograph slipped onto the cold bricks behind him.

He had only taken a few steps when a soft, innocent voice broke the silence. "Mister, why do you have a picture of my mommy?"

David froze. A cold dread washed over him, making his breath hitch in his throat. He slowly turned around. Standing there was a young girl, no older than six, clad in a fluffy white fleece jacket. In her small hands, she held the precious photo of Sarah. David's heart hammered violently against his ribs. He stepped closer, his boots clicking sharply against the brick pavement.

"What did you say?" David asked, his voice barely a whisper.
"My mommy," the girl repeated, pointing a tiny finger at the woman in the picture.

David shook his head in distress, his eyes wide with a mixture of confusion and sudden anger. "That's my wife," he asserted, his voice cracking. "She died years ago."

The little girl did not back down. She held the photo higher, her expression defiant. "No, my mom is alive," she insisted. As David reached out to take the photo, the low, setting sun caught her eyes, turning them a striking, almost supernatural shade of deep red. It was a rare ocular condition, but in that light, it looked like an omen. David gasped, stepping back in sheer shock.
