The Weight of a Single Loaf of Bread

The soft glow of the crystal chandeliers did little to warm the cold, clinical atmosphere of the elite dining room. George sat at the head of the mahogany table, surrounded by men in tailored suits who spoke only in the language of acquisitions and profit margins. But George’s mind was elsewhere, drifting back to a past he had spent a lifetime trying to outrun.

Suddenly, a soft, trembling voice broke through the low hum of corporate chatter.

"Excuse me, sir,"

an elderly waitress whispered, her hands shaking as she balanced a heavy silver tray. George turned to politely decline, but the moment his eyes locked onto hers, his world ground to a sudden halt. The silver-streaked hair and the deep lines etched into her face were new, but those eyes—pale blue and filled with an undeniable warmth—were burned into his memory.

In an instant, the lavish restaurant faded away, replaced by the bitter cold of a rainy night thirty-five years ago. A young George had been shivering in a dark, trash-snarled alleyway, his stomach aching from days of starvation. A young woman in a faded apron had knelt in the freezing mud beside him, breaking her only loaf of bread in half.

"You eat first,"

she had whispered with a smile that felt warmer than any fire. She had saved his life that night, giving him the strength to survive and build the empire he now commanded.

Back in the warm light of the restaurant, a tear escaped George’s eye. He stood up, ignoring the bewildered looks of his business associates, and gently took the heavy tray from her hands. He reached into his pocket and pressed a set of keys into her worn palm.

"It was you. You fed me when no one did,"

George said, his voice thick with unshed tears.

Hazel shook her head in emotional disbelief, whispering,

"No..."

But George held her hands tightly, his gaze unwavering.

"You'll never work another day, because this place... it's yours."
