The Arena of Fate

The blinding midday sun beat down mercilessly on the granite sands of the royal colosseum. Nineteen-year-old Leo stood in the dead center of the vast arena, his breathing shallow and rapid. He wore nothing but a rough-spun brown tunic, a stark contrast to the gleaming armor of the royal guards lining the perimeter. High above, in the shaded comfort of the royal box, King Robert sat upon his gilded throne, a smug, cold sneer playing on his bearded lips. Beside him, High Cleric Thomas watched with detached, clinical interest, his flowing white robes draped elegantly over the stone balustrade.

To the court, Leo was merely a peasant boy sentenced to death for a crime he didn’t commit. But to the King, Leo was a loose end that needed to be severed. The heavy iron gates across the arena ground open with a screech of rusted metal. From the darkness of the pit emerged a creature of pure nightmare—a massive black lion, its fur absorbing the sunlight, its eyes glowing with an unnatural, fierce yellow fire.

"Let the judgment of the gods be carried out!" King Robert bellowed, his voice echoing through the packed stands.

With a deafening roar that shook the very foundation of the colosseum, the shadow beast charged. Leo had no weapon, no shield. As the massive predator lunged, its heavy paws slammed into his chest, throwing him back into the dirt. The beast loomed over him, its hot breath washing over Leo’s face. He braced for the inevitable pain, closing his eyes.

But the strike never came. Instead, a warm, rough tongue began to gently lick the deep, stitched scar running down Leo's right arm. A collective gasp rippled through the spectators. High Cleric Thomas stood up, his face draining of color as he stared in absolute disbelief. In the front row of the stands, a young spectator named Toby pointed a trembling finger.

"That scar belongs to the warrior who defeated the Shadow Dragon!" Toby screamed.
King Robert’s triumphant smile instantly shattered into a mask of pure terror.
