The King Sentenced Me to Death, But the Beast Revealed My Secret Identity
The Judgment of the Arena
The sun beat down mercilessly upon the white limestone of the grand colosseum, baking the dusty ground where young Leo stood. At just twenty years old, wearing nothing but a simple linen tunic, he looked fragile against the monumental stone walls. Up in the shaded royal box, King Robert sat with a smug smile playing on his lips, his polished gold crown reflecting the harsh midday glare. Beside him, High Cleric Thomas adjusted his pristine white vestments, his eyes cold and devoid of mercy. To the thousands of spectators filling the stands, Leo was a traitor sentenced to a brutal death. To the King and the Cleric, he was a loose end that needed to be erased.
A low, mechanical rumble echoed through the arena as the heavy iron gates ground open. Out of the darkness stepped a massive black lion, its fur as dark as midnight and its eyes glowing with an eerie, supernatural yellow light. The crowd gasped, then erupted into deafening cheers. The beast locked its gaze on Leo and charged, its powerful paws throwing up clouds of dust. Leo tried to step back, but his foot caught on a loose stone, and he tumbled hard onto the ground.
The predator loomed over him, its hot breath washing over his face. Leo closed his eyes, bracing for the final, fatal bite. But the pain never came. Instead, the giant beast lowered its snout, sniffing the air, and gently licked a deep, stitched scar running down Leo's right arm. The lion then sat back on its haunches, its glowing eyes turning remarkably soft.
"That scar belongs to the warrior who defeated the Shadow Dragon!"
The voice of a young spectator named Toby cut through the sudden, stunned silence of the arena. Toby pointed dramatically from the stands, his face pale with realization. Instantly, the smug smile vanished from King Robert's face, replaced by a look of sheer, unadulterated horror.
