The Judgment of the Arena

The midday sun beat down mercilessly upon the stone colosseum, baking the sand beneath Leo’s bare feet. At just nineteen years old, his life had been reduced to a cruel spectacle for the amusement of the court. Clad in a simple white tunic, he stood alone in the center of the massive arena, surrounded by thousands of cheering spectators. High above in the royal balcony sat King Robert, his rugged face twisted in a smug smile of satisfaction, alongside High Cleric Thomas, whose pristine white robes gleamed in the harsh sunlight.

Leo’s crime was nothing more than speaking out against the crown's tyrannical taxation, but in King Robert’s empire, dissent was a death sentence. Suddenly, the heavy iron gates groaned open, and a collective gasp echoed through the stands. Out charged a massive black lion, its muscles rippling beneath its dark coat and its eyes glowing with a terrifying yellow light. The beast locked onto Leo and bolted across the sand with lethal speed.

Leo stumbled backward, falling onto the hot sand as the shadow of the giant beast loomed over him. He braced for the inevitable, closing his eyes as the lion’s hot breath washed over his face. But instead of tearing him apart, the beast lowered its massive head. With shocking gentleness, it began to lick a deep, stitched scar on Leo’s right forearm.

The colosseum fell into an absolute, breathless silence. In the lower decks, a young spectator named Toby stood up, pointing dramatically at the arena floor.

"That scar belongs to the warrior who defeated the Shadow Dragon!"
Toby’s voice rang out, shattering the quiet. King Robert’s smile instantly vanished, replaced by a mask of pale shock, while High Cleric Thomas stared in utter disbelief at the boy on the sand.
