The Judgment of the Arena

The blinding afternoon sun beat down mercilessly upon the dusty stone arena, casting long, harsh shadows across the sand. Leo stood in the center, his chest rising and falling heavily beneath his coarse linen tunic. He was stripped of his armor, his status, and his dignity, but his spirit remained unbroken. He looked up at the gilded royal box where King Robert sat, a smug, self-satisfied smile playing on his lips. Beside him, High Cleric Thomas stood draped in pristine, embroidered white robes, his eyes filled with cold calculation. They had orchestrated this public execution to silence the one man who knew the truth about their treason.

A low, vibrating rumble echoed from the dark dungeons beneath the stadium. The heavy iron gates groaned as they were hoisted upward. From the darkness emerged the Shadow Beast—a giant black lion with eyes like glowing amber. The starved predator roared, a sound that shook the very foundation of the colosseum, causing the onlookers in the stands to draw back in terror. With terrifying speed, the beast charged aggressively across the sand, kicking up a cloud of dust.

Leo had no weapon to defend himself. As the massive predator towered over him, he fell backward onto the sand, closing his eyes and bracing for the inevitable. But instead of tearing him apart, the lion paused. It lowered its massive head, its hot breath washing over Leo’s face, and softly licked the jagged, stitched scar on his right forearm.

The stadium fell into a stunned silence. A young spectator named Toby pointed urgently from the front row, his voice echoing through the quiet. "That scar belongs to the warrior who defeated the Shadow Dragon!" he shouted. The crowd gasped in amazement. In the royal box, High Cleric Thomas stared in utter disbelief, while King Robert’s confident smile instantly twisted into absolute shock.
