"You're just broke old trash," Richard snarled, his voice dripping with venom. "You have nothing left, and this house is mine now!"

He raised his fist to strike her arm again, convinced that no one was around to stop him. For months, he had bullied and harassed his mother, trying to force her to sign over the deed to the family home. He thought she was entirely defenseless, isolated from the rest of the world. But he had made a fatal mistake. He didn't know that Maya, Martha’s granddaughter, had just returned home from her military deployment.
