A Tearful Interruption

The scent of fresh white roses filled the sunlit chapel as Mark stood at the altar, looking at his beautiful bride, Vanessa. The ceremony was perfect, a culmination of months of planning. But just as the priest began the vows, the heavy wooden doors at the back of the chapel creaked open, letting in a sudden chill. A young blonde girl in a dusty pink dress stood there, sobbing quietly, holding a creased, torn photograph in her hands.

Silence fell over the congregation. Vanessa froze, her hand slipping from Mark's grasp. The little girl, Lily, walked tearfully down the aisle, her eyes locked on Mark. When she reached the altar, she held up the photograph—an old picture of Mark from his college days.

"I don't want money, please," Lily sobbed, her voice trembling. "I just want my mom not to go to heaven."

Mark knelt on the soft carpet, his heart hammering against his ribs. "Who are you? Who sent you?" he asked gently, trying to soothe the crying child.

"Nobody. I came because she's dying," Lily cried.

Mark's breath hitched. "What's your mother's name?"

"Johanda," Lily responded. "She kept your picture."

The name struck Mark like a lightning bolt. Johanda was his first love, the woman who had vanished without a trace six years ago. Abandoning his wedding, Mark ran out of the chapel with Lily. They rushed to a sterile hospital room, where Johanda lay pale and weak, surrounded by beeping monitors. Mark fell to his knees by her bedside, tears streaming down his face.

"I'm here, I'm here. Why didn't you tell me?" Mark cried.

Johanda opened her weak eyes, offering a heartbreaking smile. "Because... she's not the only one," she whispered.

she's not the only one," she whispered.
