A Hopeless Request

The afternoon sun filtered weakly through the frosted glass of the downtown bakery, casting long shadows across the racks of freshly baked sourdough and sweet pastries. Behind the counter stood Sarah, a young clerk wearing a black visor, her expression one of utter boredom as she wiped down the immaculate glass display. The bell above the door chimed softly, breaking the quiet hum of the shop. A young boy, no older than nine, stepped inside. He was holding a crying toddler girl tightly in his arms.

The boy’s name was Toby. His face was smudged with dirt, his blonde hair messy, and his thin jacket was entirely inadequate for the autumn chill. In his arms, his little sister, Lily, whimpered softly. "I'm hungry," she whispered, her tiny hand clutching her stomach. Toby offered her a reassuring squeeze before stepping up to the counter. He looked up at Sarah with large, hopeful eyes. "Do you have any bread from yesterday that you sell for less?" he asked, his voice trembling slightly.

Sarah barely glanced down at them, her demeanor cold and indifferent.

"We don't sell leftovers here,"
she replied flatly, returning to her wiping. Lily began to cry harder, her tiny shoulders shaking with heavy sobs. Toby hugged her closer, trying to shield her from the clerk’s harsh rejection, his own eyes filling with desperate tears.

At a nearby table, Richard, a handsome businessman in a sleek grey suit with silver-grey hair at his temples, had been watching the exchange. His heart ached at the sight. Standing up, he walked directly to the counter. He looked at Sarah and commanded,

"Pack everything."
Sarah blinked in surprise. "Sir?" she questioned, confused.
"Everything,"
Richard repeated firmly. He then knelt before the dirty, frightened children, holding Toby gently by the shoulders.
"Come with me,"
Richard said softly. Toby looked at him with guarded, weary eyes. "Why?" he asked. As Richard looked deeper into the boy's striking blue eyes, his own eyes filled with sudden, overwhelming tears. He recognized those eyes, and a long-buried memory began to surface.
