Richard guided Toby and Lily out of the bakery and toward his parked luxury sedan, carrying the boxes of warm bread Sarah had hastily packed. Once inside the warm car, Richard handed the children fresh croissants. They ate with a desperate, heartbreaking hunger. As Toby ate, Richard couldn't stop staring at the tarnished silver locket hanging around the boy's neck. It was a custom piece he had gifted to his sister-in-law, Clara, a decade ago, just before she and his nephew vanished following his brother Daniel's tragic death.
"What is your name, son?"Richard asked, his voice thick with emotion. Toby swallowed a bite of bread and looked up. "Toby Vance," he whispered. Richard’s heart stopped. Toby was indeed his missing nephew.
"And where is your mother, Toby?"Richard asked gently. Toby’s eyes welled with tears. "She’s really sick in our apartment. A mean man is there right now. He said he’s going to throw us out because we don't have rent money."
Filled with protective fury, Richard ordered his driver to speed to the address Toby provided. They arrived at a dilapidated brick building. Hurrying down the dark concrete stairs to the basement, they were met with the sound of aggressive shouting. A heavy-set landlord was actively tossing cardboard boxes of meager belongings into the dirty hallway. Inside the damp, freezing room, a frail, terribly thin woman was weeping on a mattress. It was Clara.
The landlord raised his hand, pointing at the door.
"Get out! I don't care if you're sick!"he yelled. Richard stepped into the room, his towering frame instantly commanding authority as he stood between the landlord and the terrified woman.
"Touch her again, and you will deal with my lawyers,"Richard growled. He wrote a check for triple the owed amount, threw it at the landlord, and ordered him to leave. The landlord grabbed the money and fled. Richard turned to Clara, but instead of relief, her face twisted in pure terror. "Please, Richard," she sobbed, shrinking away.
