The cold night air did little to soothe Megan’s racing thoughts as she hurried down the narrow cobblestone alleyway. Overhead, warm string lights swayed gently in the breeze, casting flickering shadows against the damp brick walls. Megan adjusted her black leather jacket, pulling it tighter against the chill. She just wanted to get home, to lock her door and forget the exhausting weight of another lonely day.

Suddenly, a sharp tug on her arm made her gasp.

the boy sobbed, tears finally spilling down his soot-covered cheeks.

"My mom has the same pin here."

Megan stared at the boy’s palm, her mind spinning into a vortex of shock and disbelief.

"That's impossible,"

she whispered, her voice barely a breath.

"Please, you have to believe me,"

Ethan pleaded, his tiny shoulders shaking as he looked up at the aunt he had never met.
