A Stranger's Golden Pin Leads Me to a Dark Secret About My Missing Sister
Previously: When a dirty, terrified little boy grabbed Megan's arm in a dark alley, she had no idea that the golden heirloom in his hand would lead her straight to her missing sister.
The Desperate Search
Megan knelt on the cold cobblestones, her hands trembling as she gently took the pin from the boy’s hand. She compared it to her own. They were identical in every scratch and curve. This was Clara’s pin. Clara, her twin sister who had vanished ten years ago after a bitter falling out with their family.
"What is your name?"
Megan asked, her voice cracking.
"Ethan,"
the boy sobbed.
"My mom is Clara. She told me if I ever got lost, or if the bad man found us, I had to find the woman wearing this pin."
Panic flared in Megan’s chest.
"Where is she, Ethan? Where is your mother?"
"She's sick. We've been living in the basement of the old theater down the street,"
Ethan cried.
"But tonight, a man kicked the door open. Mom told me to run and find you. She said you lived nearby."
Megan didn’t hesitate. She grabbed Ethan’s hand, and together they sprinted through the labyrinth of alleys toward the abandoned theater. The heavy iron door was slightly ajar. Inside, the air was thick with dust and decay. They rushed down the concrete stairs into the boiler room, but when Megan pushed the door open, her heart shattered.
The small cot was empty. A lantern lay shattered on the floor, its oil pooling near a smear of fresh blood. On the wooden crate lay a crude note: "If you want to see her alive, bring the other pin to the warehouse at Pier 4. No police."
Before Megan could process the horror, a heavy footstep echoed behind them. Megan spun around, shielding Ethan, expecting the worst. Instead, a tall man with graying hair stepped into the dim light.
"Megan?"
the man gasped.
It was Arthur, their estranged father. He had a look of sheer desperation on his face, holding a tracking device.
"I've been looking for Clara for years,"
Arthur whispered.
"And I think I just found where they took her."
