The atmosphere inside the prestigious jewelry parlor was thick with the scent of expensive beeswax and imported perfumes. Crystal chandeliers cast warm, fractured light across the polished mahogany counters and pristine glass showcases. Lily stood near the back, her fingers nervously tracing the worn fabric of her beige cardigan. She felt entirely out of place among the glittering diamonds, but she held tight to the one thing that gave her courage: a tarnished silver locket.

Suddenly, a sharp voice cut through the quiet hum of the store. "What is a creature like you doing in a respectable establishment?"

Lily turned to find Victoria, a wealthy patron known for her haughty attitude and endless fortune, staring down at her. Victoria’s white silk dress shimmered, and the heavy emeralds around her neck seemed to mock Lily’s simple appearance. Before Lily could respond, Victoria lunged forward, her manicured fingers digging into Lily’s hand. With a cruel twist, she forcefully pried the silver locket from Lily’s grasp.

Victoria sneered, slamming the small medallion onto the glass counter.

"Let's all see the treasure this little beggar thinks makes her important," Victoria declared, her voice dripping with malice.

Desperate and humiliated, Lily looked past her tormentor to the elderly man behind the counter. Arthur, wearing his signature olive vest, had watched the exchange with growing concern.

"Please, sir," Lily pleaded, her voice cracking. "My mother said only the man who sold the other half should see it."

Arthur’s breath hitched. He slowly reached out and picked up the silver medallion. As his thumb brushed over the unique scrollwork, his eyes widened in profound shock. The color drained from his face, and his hands began to tremble.

"I made this pair," Arthur whispered, his voice trembling with a lifetime of grief. "I made this pair for my daughter and her newborn baby... before they vanished into the night."
