Victoria’s haughty laugh turned shrill. She stepped between Lily and the elderly jeweler, her eyes darting nervously. "Arthur, don't be ridiculous! This girl is clearly a con artist. She probably stole that cheap trinket from a pawn shop or found it in the trash. Guard! Get this beggar out of here before she steals something else!"

But Arthur ignored his stepdaughter entirely. He looked at Lily, his eyes searching her face, finding familiar traces of a daughter he had mourned for over two decades. "Where did you get this, child?" he asked, his voice soft but urgent. "Tell me the truth."

Lily wiped a tear from her cheek and took a deep breath.

"My mother passed away last month," Lily explained. "On her deathbed, she confessed that she wasn't my biological mother. She said twenty-two years ago, she found a crashed car at the bottom of the ravine near the old highway. The driver was gone, but there was a baby girl crying in the backseat, wearing this locket. She was desperate for a child, so she took me and kept it a secret."

Hearing this, Victoria went pale. As Arthur’s stepdaughter, she had spent years positioning herself to inherit his massive jewelry empire. If this girl was Arthur’s long-lost granddaughter, Victoria’s dreams of absolute wealth would vanish.

"This is a lie! A fabricated story!" Victoria shrieked. She lunged across the counter, trying to snatch the locket back to destroy the evidence. "I won't let you swindle my family, you little thief!"

She grabbed Lily’s arm, pulling her violently toward the door. "Get out of here! I am calling the police!"

Arthur slammed his hand onto the counter, the sound echoing like a gunshot.

"Let her go, Victoria!" Arthur roared, his gentle demeanor completely vanishing. "If you touch her again, I will have you escorted out of my store and written out of my life forever!"
